Copper Coated Steel and Skin Effect

Skin effect is  the  tendency  of  an  alternating  electric  current  (AC)  to  become  distributed within a conductor such that the current density is largest near the surface of the conductor, and decreases with greater depths in the conductor. The electric current flows mainly at the “skin” of the conductor, between the outer surface and a level called the skin depth (d).




Copper Coated Steel (CCS), also known as copper molecular bonded steel is a bi-metallic product, mainly used in the wire industry that combines the high mechanical strength of steel with the conductivity and resistance to corrosion of copper.

Copper Coated Steel wire find applications in earthing, connection of earth electrodes to metallic structures, earth grid/meshes in substations, lightning protection conductors and inner conductor of coaxial telecommunication cables. Copper coated welding wire has become common since wire welding equipment has become popular. This wire is also sometimes used for power transmission and by a few for making antennas, especially long wire antennas that need extra strength to withstand the tension without stretching excessively.The main properties of these conductors are High corrosion resistance (copper surface), High tensile strength (steel code), Resistance against material fatigue.Since the outer conductor layer is low-impedance copper, the skin effect gives copper coated RF transmission lines impedance at high AC frequencies similar to that of a solid copper conductor. Tensile strength of copper-clad steel conductors is greater than that of ordinary copper conductors. Due to the inseparable union (molecular bonding) of the two metals, it deters theft since copper recovery is impractical and thus has very little scrap value.Installations with copper-clad steel conductors are recognized as fulfilling the required mechanical / electrical and chemical withstand properties. For this reason, it is used with preference when cost is a concern.
